Where it all begins ... Gmail

Gmail is a free, advertising-supported webmail, POP3 and IMAP service provided by Google. In November 2010, it had 193.3 million monthly users. Gmail has a search-oriented interface views mail in conversation mode similar to an Internet forum.

Gmail's spam filtering is a community-driven system. When any user marks an email as spam it provides information to identify future messages for all Gmail users. Users may tune the system to allow mail marked as spam to be handled in preferred ways.

Gmail Mobile is a free service, developed to provide access to Gmail from mobile devices such as cell phones, or smartphones. A user requires Gmail account and a mobile device that meets the following requirements:

  • Internet access and a WAP enabled web browser
  • XHTML compliant
  • Have cookies enabled & the mobile network must also allow cookies to be set
  • It must allow SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) traffic

Google Buzz integrates with Gmail allowing users to share links and media, as well as status updates.
